Khartoum: Rhino – Authorities in Khartoum completely demolished the Mandela neighborhood in the Mayu area south of the beltway on Monday as part of ongoing campaigns to remove citizens’ homes under the banner of “combating illegal housing in the capital.”
Local human rights organizations, including Kanabi Conference, condemned what they called the systematic demographic change project in the capital, adopted by the Port Sudan government under a package of laws, including the Foreigners Act and the Informal Housing Act, which aim to remove citizens from the Kordofan, Darfur, and Blue Nile ethnic groups from the capital and the central and northern states.
The affected residents explained that the removal campaigns carried out by the local authorities did not take into account the objective need to provide alternatives to their housing, which caused widespread discontent among them and led them to consider the move as deliberate targeting”.
