Port Sudan authorities appoint a killer of a teacher as director of education in Kassala, prompting objections from teachers’ committee

Kassala: Rhino – The Sudanese Teachers’ Committee in Kassala State has expressed its strong rejection of the decision to appoint Al-Hassan Ahmed Mohammed Hamroun, one of those accused of killing the martyred teacher Ahmed Al-Kheir under torture, as director of education in Kassala.

Teacher Ahmed Al-Kheir was arrested at his home on January 27, 2019, after being incited and pursued by the then director of education in the Khashm Al-Qirba educational district, Al-Hassan Ahmed Muhammad Hamroun, a well-known security source. He was seen driving his car behind the martyr before his arrest and was responsible for monitoring the martyr’s movements, motivated by old disputes, mainly due to Ahmed Al-Khair’s exposure of Hamroun’s corruption, his rigging of previous teachers’ elections, and his theft of school seals.

On Friday, February 1, 2019, five Land Cruisers carrying 35 members of the security apparatus entered the security unit buildings in Khashm al-Qirba. All but three of them were wearing the military uniform of the Operations Department, and all of them belonged to the security apparatus command in Kassala State. They were the ones who tortured Ahmed al-Khair, inserting a metal rod into his anus until he died.

In a press statement, the Teachers’ Committee considered that the appointment of the murderer of teacher Ahmed al-Kheir as director of education in Kassala by the Port Sudan government was a major provocation to teachers in Sudan, as well as to the families of the martyrs who were arrested, tortured, and killed at the hands of Hassan Hamron.
