Rhino: Agencies – A report by Africa Intelligence, a platform specializing in African affairs, revealed the growing influence of the family of Sudanese Sovereign Council President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in the gold sector, which accounts for half of the country’s exports. According to the report, this influence overshadows the role of the civilian government and is exercised by the brother of the Sovereign Council President, lawyer Hassan al-Burhan.
According to Africa Intelligence, the day after his appointment as the new Minister of Mining, Nour al-Daim Taha received an unexpected visit from Hassan al-Burhan, who came to discuss mining policies with him, in a move that the report considered an indication that al-Burhan would not leave the civilian government any say in this strategic issue.
Various reports indicate that Hassan al-Burhan manages his personal interests in the mining sector, benefiting from facilities provided to him by his brother. According to these reports, Hassan al-Burhan has made huge profits and received large sums of money from mining companies in exchange for granting them the necessary approvals and exploration blocks.
After relations between Sudan and the UAE deteriorated due to the Burhan government’s accusations that Abu Dhabi was financing the war and supporting the Rapid Support Forces, the government, which is controlled by the army, sought an alternative to the UAE, which is the main gateway for Sudanese gold to the global market.
A month after his informal meeting with Hassan al-Burhan, Minister Nur al-Daim Taha met with his Egyptian counterpart and signed a memorandum of understanding on mining agreements, according to Africa Intelligence.
Reports indicate that part of the al-Burhan family has been residing in Egypt since the outbreak of the civil war on April 15, 2023.”
