Khartoum: Rhino – The Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces (Taqaddom) on Monday expressed its deep condemnation of the Russian position, saying it is a cover for the continuation of massacres in Sudan, hindering efforts to address the largest humanitarian tragedy in the world, and leaving the Sudanese people under the specter of hunger, disease and poverty.
“Russia used its veto power to overturn a resolution approved by the three African representatives in the Security Council, which belies its claim to be biased in favor of the issues of the southern countries and their peoples,” she added.
The coordination continued in a statement on Monday: “The UN Security Council held a special session on Sudan today, Monday, November 18, 2024, in which it discussed a draft resolution submitted by Britain and Sierra Leone, which included texts calling for an end to the war in Sudan, condemning violations, holding perpetrators accountable, delivering humanitarian aid, and implementing the Jeddah Declaration. Russia used its veto power and voted against the resolution, while all 14 remaining Council members voted in favor.
In its statement, the Coordination praised the effort made by Britain and Sierra Leone in drafting the resolution, thanked the 14 member states that voted in favor of it, and called on them to continue working to contribute to stopping the war, protecting civilians, and delivering humanitarian aid in Sudan.
The statement added: “We at Taqaddam believe that the high-level attention and global consensus witnessed at the Security Council session today – from which only one country was absent – represents a glimmer of hope for Sudanese that the world has begun to realize the magnitude of the disaster our country is going through, and that it is ready to help achieve peace in Sudan.
We emphasize that we are even more determined to continue to strive to end the suffering of our people by all means, and we will continue our efforts inside and outside Sudan to end the war and address its effects in a comprehensive and equitable manner.
