Volker Perthes: Kamil Idris has limited powers and works under military command

Rhino: Agencies – Former UN envoy to Sudan Volker Perthes said that those who appointed Port Sudan Prime Minister Kamel Idris will measure his success by his commitment to implementing their directives.

Perthes ruled out any comparison between Prime Minister Dr. Abdullah Hamdok and the head of the de facto authority, Kamel Idris, stating categorically that the latter does not have the same resume as Hamdok.

In an interview with Al-Majalla, Perthes emphasized that Hamdok was widely accepted by various components of Sudanese society and enjoyed significant international support for rebuilding the state and achieving the goals of the revolution: freedom, justice, and democracy.

He added: “Today, we have a prime minister who works under the authority of a sovereign council led by the military, and the margin of maneuver available to this position is now much narrower than it was for Hamdok.”

Perthes said: “Let me say it clearly: those who appointed the new prime minister will measure his success by the extent of his commitment to implementing their directives.”
