Sudan: Dollar nears 3,000-pound mark amid unprecedented economic downturn

Rhino: Agencies – The Sudanese market today witnessed a sharp rise in foreign currency prices, with the US dollar approaching the 3,000 Sudanese pound mark in unofficial trading. amid stark disparities in prices between official banks and the parallel market, which is considered a serious indicator of the worsening economic crisis that has been plaguing the country since the outbreak of armed conflict in April 2023.

The Nile Bank recorded the highest official price at 2,216.5 pounds for sale, while the gap between the official price and the parallel market reached more than 500 pounds, with prices varying between banks from 2,000 to 2,216 pounds.

Field data showed that the pound fell by 390% in just two years, and the price of the dollar rose from 560 pounds (2023) to 2,753 pounds (2025), with expectations that it will soon exceed the 3,000-pound mark.

The reasons for the crisis stem from the ongoing armed conflict and its economic repercussions, with a shortage of foreign currency and weak cash reserves, as well as a loss of confidence in the official banking system and the spread of the parallel market and irregular transfers.

There is also the impact of international sanctions on the economy, and Sudan is expected to experience a wave of catastrophic inflation amid fears of a complete collapse of purchasing power and a significant increase in the rate of money smuggling abroad.
