UN Security Council holds meeting to discuss situation in Sudan

Khartoum: Rhino – The UN Security Council is holding an open briefing this morning, Friday, followed by closed consultations, on the situation in Sudan. The meeting is being held pursuant to Resolution 2715, adopted on December 1, 2023, which requested the UN Secretary-General to provide a briefing every 120 days on the UN’s efforts to support Sudan on its path to peace and stability.

The Council is expected to hear briefings from Martha Bobi, Assistant Secretary-General for African Affairs in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, and a representative of civil society.

Bubie is likely to provide an overview of the deteriorating security situation in Sudan. In June, the conflict saw shifts in the front lines and intensified fighting across several areas. Heavy fighting continued in the Kordofan region, where all parties sought to consolidate their gains on the ground.

The Council is also expected to hear a briefing from the Chair of the Sudan Sanctions Committee, established by the Council pursuant to Resolution 1591, on the work of the Committee. In a closed consultation, the Council will hear a briefing from the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra.
