South Sudan: Atta’s threats are provocative, and we are ready to defend our nation against any form of aggression

Rhino: Agencies – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan on Monday expressed its deep concern and strong condemnation of the recent public statements made by General Yasser Al Atta, Assistant Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, in which he issued threats of military aggression against the people and sovereignty of South Sudan.

The statements made by General Atta on 23 March 2025, in which he announced the readiness of the Sudanese government and its armed forces to deal with what he described as ‘traitors’ inside the Republic of South Sudan, are not only reckless and provocative, but also a blatant violation of the principles of good neighborliness, peaceful coexistence and international law, the South Sudanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The statement reads: ‘The Government of the Republic of South Sudan remains firmly committed to regional peace and stability and has consistently called for dialogue and diplomatic engagement to resolve disputes. We reiterate our call for an immediate end to the devastating conflict in Sudan, which continues to force Sudanese citizens to flee across our borders in search of safety. We urge the leadership of the Republic of Sudan to reaffirm its commitment to peaceful relations and to ensure that the public statements and actions of its officials reflect respect for international norms and the sovereignty of all states.’

The statement continued: ‘Furthermore, we call on regional and international partners, including the African Union and the United Nations, to take note of these hostile statements and engage with the Republic of Sudan to prevent any escalation that could jeopardize regional peace and security. The Government of the Republic of South Sudan will take all necessary measures to protect its territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens. We remain vigilant and ready to defend our nation against any form of aggression, while continuing to seek diplomatic solutions to maintain peace in our region.’
