Kampala: Rhino – Citizen Bakhit Wafi Abdullah died in the Ugandan capital Kampala after a long battle with kidney failure. The Sudanese embassy refused to grant him a passport to travel to India for a kidney transplant, citing the law of foreign faces.
In 2023, he traveled to South Sudan accompanied by his son, who was going to donate his kidney to him. After conducting all the necessary tests and sending them to a hospital in India, the hospital agreed to perform the operation, according to a statement from his family posted on social media on Tuesday.
According to the family, the Sudanese embassy in South Sudan refused to grant them passports on the grounds that there was a ban. The deceased continued to visit the embassy building for more than six months to no avail.
The deceased then went to Kampala and managed to obtain a passport from the United Nations. The Ugandan government sympathized with him and sent a letter from the Council of Ministers to the Indian embassy, but the embassy refused to grant him a visa, considering that the UN passport was merely a travel document and that they had never encountered a similar case before.
The deceased was forced to return to Juba once again, hoping that they would sympathize with him, but the answer was the same: “No passport for you.”
