Ibrahim al-Mirghani, Minister of Cabinet Affairs in the Government of Peace
Rhino: Agencies – Ibrahim al-Mirghani, a leader in TASIS Alliance and former Minister of Cabinet Affairs in the transitional peace government, attacked recent calls for an internal dialogue sponsored by the armed forces, describing them as a renewed attempt to revive the previous partnership between the army and the Islamic Movement under the banner of “national consensus.”
In press statements on Saturday, Al-Mirghani explained that the parties that engineered the October 25 coup and caused the outbreak of the April 15 war lack the legitimacy to sponsor any serious national dialogue, noting that decision-making within the military establishment has come under the dominance of elements of the Islamic Movement and remnants of the former regime.
He added that any political process under the army’s supervision is nothing more than a sham trial aimed at granting new legitimacy to the existing alliance between the military and the Islamists, noting that the Sudanese people had already made their choice during the December revolution by rejecting the rule of the military-Islamist duo.
Al-Mirghani emphasized that the way out of the crisis requires a completely different path based on holding a national dialogue under the auspices of neutral regional or international parties, with the active and direct participation of civilian and revolutionary forces, alongside dismantling the Islamic Movement’s grip on the levers of state power, and restructuring and rebuilding the armed forces and security apparatus, as well as the establishment of accountability for all those implicated in violations and war crimes.
Al-Mirghani concluded his remarks by describing Burhan’s call for dialogue as a “desperate attempt to revive a defunct regime,” asserting that the current awareness of the Sudanese public is sufficient to thwart these “old tricks”.
