Experts: Sudan’s army chief’s ambition to rule Sudan could lead to the country’s partition

Experts warned that Sudanese army chief Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s ambition to rule Sudan and monopolize power could lead to the division of the country. The experts emphasized in exclusive statements to Eram News that Burhan’s desire to stay in power has made him “strengthen” the Islamic Movement, which is influential in the civil and military state apparatus and adopts its political project through the ongoing war with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Political analyst Daoud Khater said that since his appearance on the scene after the fall of former President Omar al-Bashir’s regime, al-Burhan has been hostile to democratic transition in the country, because he is “a dictatorial figure who wants to monopolize power and impose himself as a ruler over the country,” as he put it.

Khater explained to Eram News that Burhan is temporarily strengthening the Islamic Movement, noting that this alliance is unlikely to last long, given the suspicion of each party against the other.

He added: “If the opportunity presents itself at any moment, Al-Burhan may sacrifice the Islamic Movement, and the latter may do the same if it feels that Al-Burhan is not implementing its instructions and political agenda.”

Khater noted that even if the war between the army and the RSF stops, another war is expected to erupt between al-Burhan and the Islamic Movement and its militias, which are currently fighting with the army.

“This alliance will not last and will not guarantee that al-Burhan will remain in power, because the Islamic Movement is fighting today for rule, not for al-Burhan, and may sacrifice him at any moment, as it did with ousted Omar al-Bashir before,” he said.

“The Sudanese Islamic Movement has previous experiences in reaching power by supporting the military, and it realizes that if left alone, the military will sacrifice it at some point,” he said, noting that it will seek to get rid of Burhan once its temporary interest in him is over.
