Massive fire in Al Naam border market consumes more than three thousand houses and shops

Rhino: Agencies – A massive fire broke out in the Na’am border market with South Sudan on Wednesday afternoon and destroyed thousands of houses, shops and businesses, in addition to warehouses and vehicles.

Sources from the market told Radio Dabanga that the fire destroyed 2,000 houses and 1,200 shops, in addition to burning 6 warehouses containing Arabic gum and shelled beans.

The sources pointed out that the fire also destroyed 22 looted vehicles and 6 exhibitions of looted property, while 850 billion pounds were looted according to police reports.

Four suspects have been arrested, the sources said, noting that the joint committee has engaged in a meeting and UNISFA.

The fire started in a limited part in the eastern direction of the Na’am market before it suddenly shifted to the western direction.

Al-Na’am market is a crossing and trade exchange area linking western Sudan with South Sudan, after the transportation movement with the center and north of the country stopped, as a result of the ongoing war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The market is located near the border town of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan and feeds the states of Kordofan and Darfur with foodstuffs coming from South Sudan and Uganda.
