Guterres calls on Iran to declare its renunciation of nuclear weapons

Rhino: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that Iran should take a first step toward improving relations with regional countries and the United States by making it clear that it does not aim to develop nuclear weapons.

He said he hoped that all parties in the Gaza Strip would realize that they would benefit from a permanent ceasefire that could open the way for negotiations on a two-state solution and urged countries to ease sanctions on Syria.

“The most important issue is Iran and the relations between Iran, Israel and the United States,” he said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

“My hope is that the Iranians realize that it is important that they make very clear their intention to renounce the acquisition of nuclear weapons, at the same time as they engage constructively with other countries in the region.”

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, addressed the same issue in Davos and said that Iran is “moving with all its might” toward enriching uranium to near weapons-grade levels.
