UN: Rhino – The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Clementine Nkweta Salami, has expressed deep concern over reports of recent attacks against civilians.
She emphasized that reports of reprisal attacks against civilians in Gezira State based on alleged affiliation or ethnicity raise serious concerns about flagrant violations of international humanitarian and human rights law. “I strongly condemn any form of violence against civilians,” Salami said.
“Civilians must be protected in armed conflicts. Reprisals and acts of violence against civilian populations and civilian objects are prohibited under international humanitarian law.”
“The ongoing violence across Sudan continues to cause immense suffering. “We must act now to stop the bloodshed and protect civilians”. She reiterated the call for a cessation of hostilities and real and comprehensive steps towards the lasting peace that the Sudanese people so desperately need.
