Meetings of Sudanese forces opposed to the war, signatories to the “Sudanese Declaration of Principles for Building a New Nation,” begin tomorrow Friday, in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, with broad participation from coalitions, political parties, civil forces, and public figures. The meetings are scheduled to continue in the Kenyan capital until Saturday, May 23.
Participating in the meetings is the “Sumoud” coalition of civil and political forces, represented by its chairman Abdullah Hamdok, the former prime minister of the civilian transitional government that was overthrown by the military, alongside the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement, Abdul Wahid Mohamed Nur, and a number of leaders and representatives of Sudanese parties, professional unions, and civil society organizations.
Sudanese political forces had previously met in Nairobi on December 16 of last year and established the “Sudanese Declaration of Principles for Building a New Nation,” which represented the first broad alignment of Sudanese anti-war forces.
The Declaration of Principles stated that there is no military solution to the Sudanese crisis and emphasized the need to work toward ending the war as soon as possible, while calling for pressure to be exerted on both sides of the conflict—the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces—to commit to the roadmap proposed by the Quartet: the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt—leading to a humanitarian ceasefire that would pave the way for a permanent and comprehensive end to the war.
These meetings come at a time of mounting regional and international pressure to end the war that has been raging in Sudan since April 2023, amid a worsening humanitarian crisis, widespread displacement, and economic collapse, while the participating civilian forces are banking on formulating a unified political stance that revives the path to a peaceful solution and paves the way for a comprehensive political process to end the conflict and establish a new transitional phase.
