Lebanon: We will hand over the son of the late cleric Al-Qaradawi to the UAE

Rhino: Agencies – Lebanese authorities will extradite Abdulrahman al-Qaradawi, son of late cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi, to the UAE, after the cabinet approved the move on Tuesday, the office of Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister said.

Abdulrahman al-Qaradawi, a poet with dual Egyptian and Turkish citizenship, was arrested in Lebanon on Dec. 28 after returning from Syria, according to his lawyer Mohammed Sablouh and Amnesty International.

His arrest followed comments he made criticizing Emirati, Saudi and Egyptian authorities in a video posted online. The UAE and Egypt have requested his extradition.

Sarah Hashash, Amnesty International’s deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa, said in a statement on Tuesday that both extradition requests are based on a legitimate exercise of his right to freedom of expression and urged the Lebanese authorities to reject the requests.

Al-Qaradawi’s lawyer said he will file an urgent appeal to prevent his extradition on Wednesday morning but fears his client will be taken out of the country before then.
