Western embassies in Sudan: Holding exams in some areas but not others exacerbate educational gaps among children

Khartoum: Rhino – The embassies of Canada, Germany and Britain in Sudan said on Sunday that holding secondary school certificate exams in certain areas of Sudan on December 28 could exacerbate educational gaps and increase inequality among children in the country.

In a joint statement on Saturday, the Canadian, German and British embassies expressed their concern about the risks associated with the transportation of children to the Sudanese certificate exams.

The statement explained that this decision could lead to the unsafe movement of students across conflict lines. This would seriously jeopardize their safety.

The three embassies urgently called on the parties to the conflict to enable and facilitate the safe passage of students for the exams scheduled for December 28, 2024. Students are already traveling to access the exams in areas under the control of the Sudanese Armed Forces.

She also called on stakeholders to develop a comprehensive strategy for future exam cycles in a transparent manner. The safety of children should be given top priority, especially the increased risks faced by girls and young people across Sudan.
