Nearly two years after the outbreak of the war between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces in Sudan, the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Center (ACLED) is tracking the evolution of violence in the country. The center published on its website an infographic that gives a snapshot of violence in Sudan in 2024, including clashes between warring parties, their use of airstrikes and drones, and the prevalence of violence targeting civilians.
The report was published on December 10, 2024, and covers the period from January 1 to November 29, 2024. The report describes the situation in Sudan as one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world today and that about 13 million people are at risk due to the ongoing war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The report notes that since the beginning of the armed conflict, the majority of military operations have been concentrated in the states of Khartoum, North Darfur and Gezira. Khartoum is a symbolic and strategic target as the capital and seat of Sudan’s central government, the report said.
As for the neighboring state of Gezira, it is characterized by its strategic location and is a crossroads for a number of major roads that connect different states of Sudan. The report noted that controlling the Jazira state allows for domination of all neighboring states, including Khartoum.
