African Union refuses to reinstate Sudan’s membership under Burhan’s rule

Addis Ababa: Rhino – The African Union (AU) refused to restore Sudan’s membership, which was suspended following a military coup in October 2021 led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. During a press conference in *Addis Ababa*, AU Commissioner Bankole Adeoye reiterated the organization’s commitment to “zero tolerance for unconstitutional coups.”

The AU is working in coordination with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the United Nations to find a “practical solution” to the Sudanese crisis, with a focus on a ceasefire and humanitarian access. The proposed AU mission to Sudan remains contingent on achieving a permanent ceasefire agreement.

Commissioner Adeoye stressed that “a military solution to the crisis is not possible without the participation of civilian and political actors,” while addressing key challenges such as the distribution of regional power, the protection of marginalized groups, and the provision of humanitarian assistance. The AU also expressed concern about external interference in Sudanese affairs.
