IAEA: Iran has offered not to increase its stockpile of enriched uranium

Rhino: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and diplomats said on Tuesday that Iran unsuccessfully tried to stave off Western efforts to pass a resolution against it at a meeting of the agency’s board of governors by offering to cap its uranium stockpile just below the degree needed to make weapons.

Iran offered not to increase its stockpile of enriched uranium to a purity of 60 percent, close to the 90 percent required for weapons, and made preparations to do so, according to one of two confidential reports provided by the agency to member states and seen by Reuters.

Diplomats said the offer was conditional on Western powers dropping their push for a resolution against Iran at this week’s meeting of the IAEA’s 35-nation board of governors because of its lack of cooperation with the agency, adding that the effort was continuing nonetheless.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Minister Abbas Araqchi told his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barro that pressure from France, Germany and Britain to introduce a resolution against Tehran would “complicate matters” and contradict “the positive atmosphere that has developed between Iran and the IAEA.”
