Port Sudan government welcomes Russian veto amid fears of civilians being held hostage to impunity

Khartoum: Rhino – Port Sudan’s pro-Islamist government welcomed Russia’s veto at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Monday against the British draft resolution on Sudan.

A statement issued by Port Sudan’s Foreign Ministry praised Russia’s position, which was “an expression of commitment to the principles of justice, respect for the sovereignty of states and international law, and support for the independence and unity of Sudan and its national institutions,” according to the statement. It expressed its hope that “this historic precedent will put an end to the approach of using the Security Council’s platform to impose trusteeship on peoples.”

The British draft resolution emphasizes the need to cease hostilities between the warring parties in Sudan, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians affected by the conflict, and explore ways to protect them.
The move comes in the wake of fears that the Islamist movement will use the fate of civilians in Sudan to hide from international justice, which is pursuing a number of its leaders, including the dissolved head of the National Congress, Ahmed Haroun, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
