Rhino: Agencies – The head of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi arrived in Iran for talks, Iranian state media reported on Wednesday, a day after he appealed to the Iranian leadership to take steps to resolve long-standing issues with the agency over Tehran’s nuclear program.
The Islamic Republic of Iran News Agency (IRNA) published a video showing Grossi meeting with Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesman for Tehran’s state-run Atomic Energy Agency (AEA), after his arrival.
The IAEA chief has been seeking progress with Iran for months on issues including pushing for greater cooperation on monitoring at nuclear sites and interpreting traces of uranium found at undeclared sites.
But those efforts have yielded little. With the return of President-elect Donald Trump, who is widely expected to reinstate a policy of maximum pressure on Iran, Grossi’s trip will provide indications of how Iran wants to proceed in the coming months.
“I am far from being able to tell the international community … what is happening,” Grossi told Reuters on Tuesday. “I’m in a very difficult position. “So it’s more like they (Iran) have to help us, to help them to some extent.
