Rhino: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on Sunday that two Israeli Merkava tanks destroyed the main gate of one of its positions and forcibly entered it, in the latest violations and attacks denounced by Israel’s allies.
UNIFIL said that after the tanks left, “peacekeepers at the same location reported several bursts of gunfire 100 meters to the north, resulting in heavy smoke. Despite wearing protective masks, 15 peacekeepers suffered effects, including skin irritation and stomach issues after the smoke entered the base. The peacekeepers are receiving the necessary treatment.” UNIFIL did not say who fired the shells or what type of projectiles it suspects.
UNIFIL added that in another incident, “IDF soldiers on Saturday stopped a critical UNIFIL logistics movement near Mays al-Jabal, preventing it from passing through.” The IDF has yet to comment on the statement.
“For the fourth time in two days, we remind the IDF and all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times,” UNIFIL continued. UNIFIL said it had requested an explanation from the IDF for these “shocking” violations.
