UN Refugee Commissioner: Strikes on Lebanon violate international humanitarian law

Rhino: Agencies – UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Sunday that air strikes on Lebanon violated international humanitarian law by targeting civilian infrastructure and killing civilians, referring to the Israeli bombing of the country.
“Unfortunately, there are many instances of violations of international humanitarian law in the way air strikes have been carried out that have destroyed or damaged civilian infrastructure, killed civilians and affected humanitarian operations,” Grandi told media in Beirut.
Grande is in Lebanon, which is struggling to cope with the displacement of more than 1.2 million people as a result of Israel’s expanded airstrikes and ground operation it says is targeting the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group. Previously, the fighting was largely confined to the border area between Israel and Lebanon, in parallel with Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip.
Grandi said all parties to the conflict and those who influence them must “stop the carnage that is happening in both Gaza and Lebanon today.”
