American envoy: Elements of al-Bashir’s regime are extending the conflict in Sudan in order to return to power

Rhino: Agencies – The US special envoy to Sudan, Tom Brillo, confirmed on Saturday that there is “continuous communication” with the African Union to develop a mechanism to monitor current and future agreements.
In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper on Saturday, Brillo pointed out that there are elements of the Bashir regime within the Sudanese army that oppose the transition towards civilian democratic rule, explaining that they seek to extend the conflict as a means of returning to power, which is contrary to the aspirations of the Sudanese people, which is contrary to the aspirations of the Sudanese people. He stressed the need to confront these elements to ensure stability in the country.
He called on the international community to assess the options available to support the implementation of the cessation of hostilities, whether at the local or national level in the future.
The US envoy explained that a military solution cannot be an option, noting that the military has missed several opportunities to end the conflict through negotiations.
He emphasized that the recent escalation by both sides will lead to the loss of many civilian lives, which calls for the need to return to the dialogue table to achieve peace and restore civilian rule.
