Rhino: Agencies – On Thursday, December 19, 2024, the UN Security Council will hold a ministerial-level session to discuss the humanitarian situation in Sudan. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is expected to chair this session as the United States assumes the rotating presidency of the Council during the month of December.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres or his representative and Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Thomas Fletcher will brief the meeting on the situation in Sudan and developments in the humanitarian situation, and a civil society representative will also brief the meeting.
This session comes a month after the Security Council failed in mid-November to adopt a draft resolution proposed by Britain and Sierra Leone aimed at protecting civilians and facilitating humanitarian access to areas affected by war and food shortages.
At a meeting chaired by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, 14 council members voted in favor of the resolution, but Russia used its veto to prevent its passage.
