Sudanese Pound Hits Record Low Against the Dollar as a New Wave of Inflation Hits

Rhino: Agencies – The Sudanese pound has plummeted in recent days, reaching approximately 6,600 pounds to the dollar on the parallel market—the currency’s lowest level since the outbreak of the war in April 2023—exacerbating living and economic pressures on the population.

Data from traders in Khartoum and Port Sudan indicate daily price fluctuations, with increased demand for the dollar against a limited supply, given the banks’ limited ability to provide foreign currency. The official rate set by the Central Bank of Sudan is 3,350 pounds for buying and 3,375 pounds for selling, highlighting a wide gap with the parallel market.

Currency traders believe the rise in demand for the dollar is linked to import financing, in addition to large-scale purchases during certain periods. They confirm that rates for international transfers are higher than local trading rates, which puts further pressure on the pound.
