Rhino: Agencies – Hundreds of Tunisians marched down the main street of the capital Tunis on Sunday, continuing protests against President Kais Saied for the second week in a row, accusing him of tightening an authoritarian grip on power ahead of presidential elections scheduled for two weeks later. The protesters chanted slogans including “The people want to overthrow the regime,” “Absurd laws, theatrical elections,” and “Leave.” Amid a heavy police presence, protesters invited by civil society organizations and political parties gathered on Habib Bourguiba Street, a focal point of the 2011 protests that sparked uprisings across the Middle East. The protest comes two days after lawmakers introduced a bill to strip the administrative court of the power to rule on electoral disputes, a move that the opposition says would undermine the legitimacy and credibility of the October 6 elections and pave the way for Saied to win another presidential term. The administrative court is widely seen as the country’s last independent body since Said dissolved the Supreme Judicial Council and removed dozens of judges in 2022.
