America: We will focus on ending wars as world leaders meet at the UN

Rhino: Agencies – Washington’s focus during next week’s United Nations General Assembly meeting will be on ending wars, revitalizing the aid system and creating a more inclusive and effective world order, US envoy to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said on Tuesday.

She specifically mentioned Russia’s war in Ukraine, the conflict in Sudan, instability in Haiti, the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Myanmar.

“As we work to silence arms, we must also redouble our efforts to address humanitarian crises,” the US envoy told reporters before a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly.

“Aid workers risk their lives to save the lives of others. “But what we hear over and over again is that humanitarian workers don’t have the resources; they don’t have the protection and they’re not allowed into (locations) to do their work.

More than 130 heads of state and government will head to New York to address the 193-member General Assembly, a week after the second assassination attempt in the United States on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

“What happened with (former) President Trump is unacceptable,” Greenfield said. “We have a responsibility to do everything we can to protect the heads of state who come here, as well as their political leaders,” Greenfield said.

“New York City has police everywhere, and Diplomatic Security supports the Secret Service to provide security for all the heads of state who will be here,” she said, adding that no head of state or government has ever had a security incident during the General Assembly.
