First shipment of aid arrives from Port Sudan to East Darfur

Rhino: Agencies – The first shipment of humanitarian aid arrived through the city of Dibba in the northern state to Abu Karnaka locality in East Darfur, coming from Port Sudan, which has become a temporary capital.
A member of the joint committee in charge of following up the humanitarian aid work in Abu Karnakka locality, Mayor Abdulrahman Juma, told “Darfur 24” that the shipment of wipers that arrived in the locality is the first of its kind to move directly from Port Sudan to the region since the outbreak of the war.
He said that the shipment carries foodstuffs and therapeutic food, provided by the World Food Program (WFP) for refugees from South Sudan.
There are 15 trucks carrying WFP aid whose final destination is Abu Karnaka locality, but they are still stuck due to heavy rains, Gomaa said.
Relief began flowing into Darfur through the Adré crossing between Sudan and Chad, after authorities agreed to open it for three months starting August 15.
As international pressure mounted, both parties to the fighting in Sudan agreed to resume emergency aid deliveries through the Dibba crossing from Port Sudan to famine-stricken areas in Darfur.
