UN recommends the deployment of neutral forces to protect civilians in Sudan

Rhino: The advisor to the Rapid Support Commander, Al-Basha Tibaiq confirmed that the recommendation of the fact-finding mission to deploy a neutral force to protect civilians in Sudan comes as a natural response to the army’s intransigence and its refusal to enter into negotiations, in addition to its continuous escalation and targeting of civilians.

Tibaiq explained that this recommendation reflects the urgent need to protect civilians under the current circumstances, noting that the current situation requires international intervention to ensure the safety of citizens.

He also noted that the deployment of the neutral force may lead to a radical change in the political scene in Sudan, contributing to the imposition of a new reality that may lead to the existence of two governments in the country.

United Nations experts today called for the urgent deployment of an independent and impartial force in Sudan to protect civilians from atrocities committed during the ongoing conflict. The experts emphasized that the situation in the country requires urgent intervention to protect human rights.

In their report, the experts appointed by the Human Rights Council pointed to gross human rights violations and international crimes in Sudan, characterizing many of these violations as “crimes against humanity.” Mohamed Chande Osman, the head of the fact-finding mission, explained that their findings reflect the urgent need for immediate action.

The mission was established by the Human Rights Council at the end of last year with the aim of documenting violations that have occurred since the beginning of the conflict in April 2023, which erupted between the army and the RSF. The conflict has left tens of thousands of dead, with estimates suggesting the death toll could be as high as 150,000, highlighting the gravity of the humanitarian situation in the country.
