International aid organizations warn of historic famine in Sudan

Rhino: Agencies – Three major aid organizations working in Sudan warned on Tuesday of a hunger crisis of ‘historic’ levels in the country, where many families have been forced to eat leaves and insects, denouncing the ‘indifferent’ attitude of the international community.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and Mercy Corps, a humanitarian organization working in Sudan, said in a joint statement on Tuesday: ‘Sudan is experiencing a hunger crisis of historic proportions. However, the silence is deafening and people are dying of hunger every day.’

The organizations added: ‘We urgently call on the international community to address the massive hunger crisis inside the country,’ noting that ’international attention and action is too little and too late, and so far, the humanitarian response plan is only 41 per cent funded.’

‘It is impossible to put into words the level of suffering the Sudanese people have endured in recent months. This indifference must end.’

More than 25 million people in Sudan – more than half of the country’s population – are acutely food insecure, the organizations said in the statement, noting that many families ‘have been forced to eat tree leaves or insects’.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been at war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The war has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths. While the actual toll of the conflict is unclear, it is estimated to be as high as ‘150,000’.
