African-European organisation condemns the killing of a young man by the intelligence service in Kassala

Kassala: Rhino – The African-European Organisation for Humanitarian Action and Development condemned today, Sunday, the killing of the young man Al-Amin Mohamed Nour, who was arbitrarily arrested on Friday evening, 30 August 2024, from the city of Wad Sharifi in Kassala State, eastern Sudan, and died under torture in the National Security and Intelligence Service detention facilities in Kassala city, early the next morning.

The organization said in a statement on Sunday that these practices blatantly violate national laws and international and regional charters that prohibit arbitrary detention, torture and extrajudicial killing, in Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and Article 2 of the Convention Against Torture.

The statement reads: ‘This offence sparked widespread outrage and evoked tragic memories of previous cases of torture and extrajudicial killings, such as the martyrdom of the young Jamal Faqaria and Ahmed al-Khair at the Kassala security office. Since the outbreak of the war on 15 April 2023, dozens of similar incidents have been recorded in areas controlled by the Sudanese army, where civilians and captured military personnel alike have been subjected to horrific forms of torture and abuse.

The organization called on the Sudanese army to conduct an independent and thorough investigation into this crime, even under the current constitutional vacuum, and to hold all those responsible accountable. The organization also demanded that the perpetrators be handed over to the police and brought to a fair trial, ensuring justice for the martyr Al-Amin Mohamed Nour and his family.

It called on the international community and regional and international human rights organizations to intensify pressure on the Sudanese army to stop such repeated violations and ensure the protection of the rights of Sudanese citizens from the practices of the outlawed security services.
