US envoy: Negative forces investing in war are working to hinder stabilization efforts in Sudan

Rhino: Agencies – The US Special Envoy for Sudan ‘Tom Brillo’ confirmed on Thursday that they will continue their efforts with partners to deliver humanitarian aid and stop hostilities between the parties to the Sudanese conflict.

In a press conference he held this afternoon – via Zoom – he pointed out that the priority now is to deliver humanitarian aid to the areas affected by famine, especially in the Darfur region, and that they are working hard to expand the delivery of this aid to the Sudanese depth from Port Sudan and through Sennar, to achieve tangible results that make a difference in the lives of the Sudanese.

The US envoy considered that the Sudanese crisis does not receive the required media coverage, but he went on to say that there is ‘good news’, given that they continue to work with a focus on improving the conditions of 25 million citizens suffering from famine, as well as the conditions of 10 million people who have been forced to leave their homes for 16 months.

And it increased: ‘President Biden and Secretary Blinken asked me and my fellow diplomats and our partners in the region to meet in Switzerland to make whatever progress we can in terms of delivering humanitarian aid and limiting hostilities.’

Together with their partners from around the world, he said, they worked intensively around the clock over the past week to achieve this progress and set a priority in terms of routes for delivering aid to famine-stricken areas and agreements to ensure the security of these routes. The guarantees also relate to the movement of aid from the east, from the city of Port Sudan to other open areas, he said.

‘We are negotiating on a daily basis to expand the scope and quantity of aid distribution and send it deep into Sudan,’ he said. President Biden and Secretary Blinken are focused on reaching tangible results to make a change in the situation of Sudanese citizens, regardless of what is written on paper, and to ensure that international aid, including food and medicine, reaches areas that have been suffering from famine for several months.

The US envoy to Sudan said he looks forward to focusing with their partners on this success as we publicly announce that we are working with the RSF to ensure that relief reaches those in need.

Tom Perriello revealed that he is working with a group of Sudanese women on issues related to the massacres committed in Sudan, due to the severity of these crimes. He emphasized that they will continue to demand additional steps from all parties to ensure that the actual obligations are implemented in accordance with international law.

There is a priority to put an end to hostilities, he said, but there is a lack of political will to achieve this.

The US envoy reiterated his conviction that it is impossible for any party to win the war militarily, and that the continuation of the war and the military escalation makes the leaders of the region unite around the most important thing, which is to put an end to this war by returning to the negotiating table.

He accused those he described as negative forces of investing in the continuation of the war, and that some political forces, including former regime leaders, who do not enjoy any popular support and have no military or political influence, are working to hinder the work of the Sovereignty Council. The US envoy noted that those he described as war mongers continue to capitalize on this crisis and that foreign fighters are arriving.

They have no interest in stabilization or the interests of Sudanese people, he said, adding that these negative forces have become a factor of instability that poses a long-term threat to the entire region.

He stressed that the Sudanese are united to end this war and have an independent, united Sudan with a professional regular army. We hope that we will be able to move forward because the current crisis in Sudan is the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world and its continuation is a threat to the stability of the region.
