US envoy calls on parties to Sudan’s conflict to implement a code of conduct that limits violations

Rhino: Agencies – A US envoy on Tuesday called on Sudan’s warring parties to implement a code of conduct to curb widespread abuses, saying the military is studying the proposal after the Rapid Support Forces signed off on it.

“They have the code of conduct in front of them,” Brillo told reporters Tuesday. “We hope to receive a response from them in the coming days,” Brillo told reporters on Tuesday.

“The goal is to change behavior so that we don’t see the use of rape and sexual slavery as a weapon of war, we don’t see this kind of exploitation and harassment at checkpoints, we don’t see this kind of indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas, including hospitals and homes.”

The RSF has agreed to a code of conduct that includes pledges to refrain from violence against women and destruction of crops.

The US special envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, said the US also presented the proposal to the army, which, unlike the RSF, did not come to Switzerland.

The conflict that erupted in April 2023 has killed tens of thousands, forced one in five Sudanese to flee their homes, and caused severe famine for more than 25 million people, “more than half the population.”

This month the United States held talks in Geneva aimed at ending the brutal war that has caused one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, and progress has been made on aid access but not a ceasefire.
