Rhino: Agencies – Police in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland state announced in a statement that they executed 10 fighters from the militant group al-Shabaab on Saturday.
The executions were carried out by firing squad in Galkacyo, Mudug region of the state, after the fighters were tried by a military court and sentenced to death for their involvement in assassinations and bombings in several locations in Galkacyo.
Police said the executed fighters ‘had previously been sentenced to death by the Armed Forces High Court, after they were found to have committed murderous offences in Galkacyo city’.
Al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab militants have been fighting for nearly two decades to overthrow Somalia’s central government. The group wants to establish a government in Somalia based on its strict interpretation of Islamic law.
