US envoy: We share the army leadership’s keenness to implement the decisions of the Jeddah Platform as a priority

Rhino: Agencies – US envoy Tom Brillo said that he shares the Sudanese army leadership’s “great” focus on the issue of enforcing the previous Jeddah agreements signed between it and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In a press conference in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Friday, Brillo added: “The RSF has responded positively by committing to the talks and prior negotiations, and with the SAF we have received positive and constructive responses, and we are working on them and hope to get full confirmation. We believe that this is separate from the inclusive political dialogue that the Sudanese people have asked for and that the African Union has taken the lead on.

The US Special Envoy for Sudan revealed that the US-sponsored talks are co-sponsored by Saudi Arabia and Switzerland, with observers from the United Nations, the African Union, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

“We have worked very closely, especially with Egypt. I just came from Cairo before Addis, it was a key partner, supporting the mediation both before and during the talks. There are other partners who care a lot about this, and they will be involved even if they don’t play an observer role, and in this case, our hope is that these and other countries will be guarantors of the deal, in response to the very real concerns of the Sudanese people and others, that previous deals have not been fully implemented.

“We designed the latest round of negotiations based on the Jeddah process, based on the fact that we must be able to align both actors inside Sudan and actors outside Sudan in a shared commitment to peace, ceasefire, and enforcement.

“We heard clearly from the Sudanese people that what they want from the international community is not more weapons and the imposition of interests on the conflict, but international partners in peace, humanitarian assistance, monitoring and enforcement that will allow the Sudanese people to return to the dreams of 2019 and the civilian transition that has inspired so many in the region and the world,” Brillo said at the press conference.
