Rhino: Agencies – The United States held the Lebanese group Hezbollah responsible on Sunday for a rocket attack that killed 12 children and boys at a football field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, threatening a wider war in the Middle East.
Israel blamed Hezbollah for the attack and said it would strike back hard after Saturday’s assault. Hezbollah denies responsibility for the attack.
The White House said in a statement on Sunday: ‘This attack was carried out by Lebanese Hezbollah. It is a missile belonging to them, launched from an area they control,’ the White House said in a statement on Sunday.)
Washington has been in talks with Israeli and Lebanese officials since Saturday’s attack, which it condemned as ‘horrific’.
The White House said Washington was working to find a diplomatic solution to end attacks on the border between Israel and Lebanon.
The attack raised fears of a widening conflict in a region already strained by Israel’s war in Gaza. The war, which began nine months ago, has killed tens of thousands and triggered a humanitarian crisis in the narrow coastal strip.
