4,000 mines and unexploded ordnance recovered in Nyala this year

Rhino: Agencies – Baladna Social Development Organization, which works in the field of mine awareness and combating mines, revealed that 4,000 mines and unexploded ordnance have been extracted in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, since January 2024.

The director of Baladna Social Development Organization in South Darfur, Mohammed Hashim, told ‘Darfur24’ on Saturday that the organization responded to a report on Thursday of a farm with foreign objects, where it was able to extract 30 landmines from a farm near the seventh regiment, located west of the army command in Nyala, adjacent to the neighborhoods of Al-Jir.

Hashim described the number of mines recovered as a threat to the lives of civilians, especially since the mines were near a main street that leads to the large market from the neighborhoods of Al Jir and Al Serif, as well as the movement of cattle.

In late December 2023, “Baladna” Development Organization was able to extract 771 shells from homes and 5,000 shells and unexploded ordnance of various types from the market, public places, government institutions and hospitals.

On July 15th, Hashim said, the organization extracted two UXO shells near a petrol station and the National Urban Water Authority.

He stressed that they did not find a map of the presence of mines in South Darfur state, but they clearly confirmed the presence of anti-human mines, which is a danger to families.

Mohammed Hashim stressed that the organization faces great challenges, most notably the lack of funding that enables it to save civilians, sending a message to the competent organizations and the International Fund for Mine Action to support the organization to protect civilians from remnants of war and mines.

The RSF took control of the army base in Nyala in October 2023, after fierce fighting, which enabled them to take control of South Darfur.
