Prime Minister: Egypt to halt electricity load shedding from Sunday

Rhino: Agencies – Egypt will stop load-shedding during the summer from Sunday, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Wednesday, following the arrival of a number of natural gas shipments, in a bid to end a crisis that has troubled Egypt’s 106 million people.

Egypt has been plagued by power cuts as demand for cooling during the summer, which increases consumption. Egypt generates most of its electricity by burning natural gas.

Load shedding refers to the rotation of power to parts of the power grid, to prevent the collapse of the entire system when demand exceeds the capacity of the system.

In a televised press conference, Madbouly said that Egypt’s daily electricity consumption exceeded 37 gigawatts, up 12 per cent compared to last year.

Madbouly said the government intends to meet summer energy demand in 2025 by investing in renewable energy.
