9 killed in armed attack on Shiite mosque in Oman

Rhino: Agencies – An armed attack on a Shiite Mosque late on Monday killed nine people, including three of the attackers, and wounded more than 25 others, law enforcement authorities in Oman said, in a rare incident in one of the Middle East’s most stable countries.

Footage circulating on social media and verified by Reuters showed people fleeing the mosque and gunshots could be heard in the video.

Officials from Pakistan, India and Oman said the dead included four Pakistanis, an Indian national and a policeman. Omani police said 28 people of different nationalities were injured, including security personnel.

The police did not say whether they had established a motive or arrested any suspects in connection with the attack, nor did they reveal the identity of the attackers.

The attack came at a time when Shiites were commemorating Ashura. The Shia celebration of Ashura has sometimes sparked sectarian tensions between Sunni and Shia Muslims in some countries, but this is unusual in Oman.
