UN allocates $22 million for humanitarian aid in Sudan

Rhino: Agencies – The United Nations on Thursday allocated $110 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to boost life-saving aid in 10 of the world’s most neglected and underfunded crises across Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan said in a statement that the emergency fund allocated $22 million to support life-saving humanitarian assistance in Sudan.

As needs increase, this allocation will enable a rapid response to Sudan’s growing crises – conflict, hunger, disease and climate shocks. More than 300 million people around the world need urgent humanitarian assistance, but funding is dwindling every year, and this year’s levels are expected to fall to an all-time low, OCHA said in a press release.

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher said: “For countries affected by conflict, climate change and economic upheaval, brutal cuts in funding do not mean humanitarian needs disappear. “Today’s Emergency Fund allocation quickly directs resources to where they are most needed.”
