The United States called on the parties to the conflict in Sudan to seek a negotiated settlement, without preconditions, that would end the violence and address the immense suffering of the Sudanese people, stressing that there is no military solution to the ongoing war in the country.

In a statement released Monday, the U.S. administration said it would continue to work with its international partners and Sudanese stakeholders to push for a humanitarian ceasefire, ensure unimpeded access to humanitarian aid, and support a path leading to a civilian transition and lasting peace.

It added that “only peace and stability can enable Sudan to return to independent civilian rule, preserve its unity, and fulfill the aspirations of its people.”

The United States expressed concern over reports that the Rapid Support Forces are massing their troops around El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, voicing fears for the safety of civilians in the city and in the Kordofan region in general, and the possibility that they may be subjected to acts of violence and abuses that could exacerbate the already worsening humanitarian crisis.

Washington called on the Rapid Support Forces to refrain from any actions that would endanger civilians, impede the delivery of humanitarian aid, or contribute to further atrocities and suffering.

The statement read: “This war has taken an unbearable toll on the Sudanese people, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence and suffering greatly from the destruction wrought by this conflict.”

The United States also called on the parties to the conflict to facilitate safe, rapid, and unimpeded access to humanitarian aid; to fulfill their responsibilities to protect civilians; and to take immediate steps to prevent further atrocities.
