Five million dollars from USAID to support Sudanese refugees in Libya

Rhino: Agencies – The United States announced on Thursday the provision of five million dollars in humanitarian aid, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to support refugees in Libya, due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan and the humanitarian crisis in the country, noting that about 2.2 million people have been forced to flee Sudan since the start of the crisis to seek safe haven in another part of the region, including in Libya.

USAID said in a statement posted on the State Department website on Thursday that it is providing this aid to two partners, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). The aid will help meet the emergency needs of Sudanese families who have been forced to flee their homes to Libya.

UNICEF’s support is helping thousands of children under the age of five with vital nutritional support, including malnutrition screening and treatment for severe and moderate malnutrition. Support to the World Food Program is providing vital food assistance to Sudanese families to help them meet their most urgent needs.

The United States reiterated its support for those affected by the Sudanese crisis and commended Libya for continuing to host refugees from Sudan. In her statement, she urged other donors to join us and increase their contributions to support those affected by the crisis, whether in Sudan or across the region.
